What dust-free grinding means, how many passes the floor requires with the grinder, and how many days of work in the flat it actually takes. No technical ambiguities, just as it is done with us.

What does it mean dust-free grinding

Traditional parquet sanding was synonymous with dust everywhere, in the flat, on furniture, throughout the entire floor. Industrial sanders with HEPA extraction solve this problem differently: dust is extracted directly at the source, i.e., at the sander's disc itself, before it can disperse into the air. Corners and transitions near skirting boards are finished with a smaller vibratory sander that has its own separate extraction. The result is not an absolute zero of dust, but there is so little that you can remain in the flat and function normally throughout the entire work period.

Nevertheless, we recommend clearing all loose items from the floor before sanding and moving furniture at least one metre away from walls and corners, where a smaller vibratory sander with its own extraction is used for finishing. It is advisable to cover textiles such as curtains or upholstered furniture with foil during the work, as fine dust spreads even with the best extraction, albeit in much smaller quantities than with conventional sanding without any extraction.

How many layers you need grinding

Sanding of parquet flooring usually takes place in two phases:

In cases of heavily damaged floors or thick layers of old varnish, coarse sanding may need to be repeated several times. Conversely, a floor that has been regularly maintained requires only one pass with coarse grit followed immediately by the final fine sanding.

How long does grinding take? lasts

A standard apartment measuring 60-100 m² can be sanded within 1-2 working days. If sanding is followed by joint filling and varnishing as part of a complete renovation, the entire process (sanding, filler, varnish) takes 2-3 days of work. However, the drying time for the varnish or oil must be added; this is not included in the "working days," but furniture cannot be moved back until it has dried. The overall schedule from the first day of sanding to when furniture can be moved back in is typically 5-7 days.

Sanding parquet flooring in an apartment. where people live

Thanks to the dust-free technology, there is no need to move out of the flat during grinding. The noise from the grinder is comparable to that of standard household appliances, so work can be carried out during the day even when family members are at home. The only temporary restriction is usually a ban on entering the room currently being ground until that section is completed; otherwise, normal household activities continue. For apartment buildings with an SVJ, we additionally adapt the work to take place within working hours from Monday to Friday, never on weekends or in the evening, to minimise the spread of noise and dust into common areas.

Sanding parquet floors price

Sanding alone, without further treatment, costs approximately from 220 Kč/m². If you add varnishing or oiling, expect a total of around 450-700 Kč/m² depending on the condition of the wood and the number of varnish layers. When sanding is combined with filling joints, it is more cost-effective to opt for the complete renovation package, which starts at 420 Kč/m² in the price list and covers all three steps at once. A detailed breakdown of prices for individual renovation steps can be found in the article on parquet renovation costs.

What to watch out for caution

Three factors that determine the result of floor grinding and whether investing in it is worthwhile at all:

Whether your floor is on the verge of being sandable or if it makes more sense to consider replacement, you will find out in the article about when renovating a wooden floor still makes sense.
